Registered Nurse Refresher Courses
Edvantage recently received a three-year New York State Workforce
Retraining Grant, to conduct Registered Nurse Refresher Courses that
help nurses return to the workforce. The series of five skills-building
classes, conducted in a one-week intensive program, includes updates
in pharmacology, EKG interpretation, management of chronic diseases,
physical health assessment, and nursing career opportunities. Edvantage
has already run three such Refresher Courses for nurses who are NYS-licensed
but have been out of the workforce for at least three years, and
usually five or ten.
Pamela Smith, Director of Edvantage, talks about one nurse, with
a BS from the University of Rochester, School of Nursing, who had
never practiced. She took the refresher course and has now taken
work as a patient care technician, to ease the transition into full-time
nursing. The course includes one year of mentoring from a seasoned
professional nurse. Having an understanding and encouraging expert
to talk to can make a big difference in a time of change and uncertainty.
