What We Do
Our courses provide the
knowledge and skills you need. They are taught
by nationally and internationally recognized faculty and instructors.
The opportunity to network with them and your fellow students often
proves as valuable as the course content. The course material is
designed to be thought provoking and stimulating.
As part of the Center for Nursing Entrepreneurship, Edvantage offers
a special focus on entrepreneurship and business opportunities matched
to your specific interests and experience. When you are successful,
we are successful.
Our History
In November 1999, Pamela Smith needed to
obtain credentials as a Registered Nurse First Assistant, so that
she could work in hand surgery. The University of Rochester School
of Nursing did
not offer a program, but as an alumna Pamela wanted to come to the school.
The Dean, Pat Chiverton, introduced Pamela to Donna Tortoretti, who
then headed up the school’s Community Nursing Center, and
Donna invited her to help put together a program. They launched it
in September 2000, with Pamela as one of seventeen students. Donna and
Pamela soon uncovered more unmet needs and opportunities for academic
programs. Pamela joined the School of Nursing in July 2001, and the
Center for Lifelong Learning was born. Donna, now CEO of the
Center for Nursing Entrepreneurship, continues to work closely with
Pamela and her team, particularly in areas of strategic planning and
national and international business development.
In 2007, the Center for Lifelong Learning became Edvantage and added
Customized Professional Development, a long-term career development
program dedicated to mentoring and coaching nurses. From delivering
a single course to 17 students in 2000, it grew to offer 60 courses
to several hundred students in 2006.
